To celebrate the the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the 56th annual Southern Christian Leadership Conference convention will take place in Birmingham, Alabama. "[SCLC chapter leaders] across the county wanted to go back to Birmingham because of the 1964 Civil Rights Act," President and CEO Charles Steele Jr said. "So 50 years later, it's only right to go back to Birmingham, Alabama."
The convention will feature panel discussions, workshops and film screenings that explore the past of the civil rights movement as well as its future as a globalized movement. Guests include actress Robin Givens, comedian and activist Dick Gregory, Alabama State University President Gwendolyn Boyd and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
For the occasion « Abraham Lincoln, the roads to freedom » by Carole Bienaimé-Besse featuring Mary Frances Berry, George E. Curry and Roger Wilkins, produced by April Snow Films will be presented to the audience.
